Ridge Preservation

Tooth extraction may be necessary for a number of reasons. It may be necessary because of severe tooth decay, to treat extreme periodontal disease, to remove an impacted tooth and prevent the spread of infection, to eliminate overcrowding, because of an accident, or a number of other reasons.

Once the dentist removes your tooth, there’s a small hole left behind that’s very sensitive. In this case, the dentist recommends a procedure called dental ridge augmentation or dental socket preservation to protect the sensitive socket after tooth extraction. In this article, we discuss what is dental ridge augmentation or dental socket preservation and detail the ridge augmentation procedure.

What is Dental Ridge Augmentation/ Dental Socket Preservation?

To put it simply, dental ridge augmentation or dental socket preservation is a bone graft procedure in which the dentist places a graft made of animal parts, human bone, or synthetic materials into the socket in order to facilitate bone growth and preservation.

Why do you Need Bone Graft Ridge Preservation after Tooth Extraction?

There are a number of reasons why you may need bone graft ridge preservation after tooth extraction. The following are some of the most important reasons.

  • Dry Socket: The socket left after the tooth extraction is generally protected by a blood clot that prevents the underlying nerve from being exposed to the external environment. However, if the extraction site is left unprotected, the clot can come undone and the nerve is exposed. This can lead to dry socket, which is extremely painful. Bone graft ridge preservation prevents that from happening.
  • Dental Implants: The alveolar ridge is a strip of bone that surrounds the root of the tooth. If this bone gets deformed, then it can prevent you from getting dental implants later. Dental implants are currently the most effective and permanent solution to replacing a missing tooth, but it requires the presence of sufficient bone structure. Over time, if the socket is left exposed, the alveolar ridge can wear away and you’ll have to get a separate bone grafting treatment later if you need dental implants.
  • Aesthetic Preservation: When the bone starts wearing away, the surrounding teeth also lose some of their support, which is why they start drifting away. This can cause your teeth to get misaligned, which can lead to a number of other issues, cosmetic and otherwise.

Ridge Augmentation Procedure

Once a tooth is removed, the bone structure that supported the tooth also starts melting away over time. This is because the lack of stimulus in the form of chewing prevents more bone from growing. You can lose as much as 25% of the bone structure within the first year after the tooth extraction. Over time, this can also cause your other teeth to start drifting and get misaligned. That’s why socket preservation or ridge augmentation procedure is done immediately after tooth extraction — to preserve the bone structure and protect the surrounding teeth.

During the ridge augmentation procedure, a bone graft is placed into the socket of the missing tooth. The graft can be made from one of four sources — another part of the individual’s body, animal parts, synthetic materials, or another person. The dentist creates an incision in the socket to expose the underlying bone. The graft is placed along with the bone and then covered up with a collagen membrane. The sutures are finally closed up and the socket is allowed to heal.

Do you Need Tooth Socket Preservation?

Tooth socket preservation isn’t, strictly speaking, a necessary procedure. In fact, plenty of dentists disagree on just how useful the procedure is. The most important reason you would need tooth socket preservation — something everyone agrees on — is if you want to opt for dental implants sometime in the future.

Dental implants are the best possible replacements for missing teeth. They are metal frameworks lodged into your jawbones so that they become a part of your body — they look, feel, and function just like real teeth. However, in order to prevent complications with dental implants, you need to opt for tooth socket preservation at the time of tooth extraction. So if you think there’s a chance that you may need dental implants in the future, it’s best to get tooth socket preservation immediately.

How to Take Care of your Socket after Tooth Extraction?

The following tips will help you take care of your socket after tooth extraction:

  • Don’t brush your teeth — even with soft-bristled toothbrushes — for at least a day after the procedure.
  • Don’t smoke cigarettes or use straws for a few days after the procedure.
  • Don’t eat hard foods because they can knock out the blood clot.

Frequently Asked Questions about Ridge Preservation

How long does it take to heal from getting your teeth pulled?

Recovery after tooth extraction usually takes a few weeks, generally one or two weeks. You may have to go to the dentist after one week so they can take the stitches off.

What are the advantages of bone grafting?

There are several advantages of bone grafting:

  • It enables you to get dental implants later.
  • Prevents a painful condition known as dry socket.
  • Protects and facilitates bone growth.
  • Prevents your surrounding teeth from drifting apart.

Is a bone graft necessary after a tooth extraction?

Bone graft is not necessary after tooth extraction, but it’s highly recommended because it can protect the exposed socket and preserve the underlying bone structure, which, in turn, enables you to later get dental implants.

Why are dental implants best for tooth replacement?

Dental implants are best for tooth replacement because they are lodged into your bones, making them a permanent part of your body rather than an inconvenient removable extension. They also look, feel, and function just like real teeth and don’t need you to alter any of your existing teeth’s structure.
