When you talk about teeth cleaning, most people just think it refers to simply brushing and flossing your teeth. But teeth cleaning actually refers to a series of specific procedures conducted by a dental hygienist in order to restore your oral health perfectly.
A deep cleaning or professional teeth cleaning procedure helps prevent gum disease and also treats any initial signs of gum disease that may be a cause for concern. Everyone should get regular professional teeth cleaning done to make sure that their teeth remain healthy. In this article, we discuss why is deep cleaning so important and the steps in the teeth cleaning procedure.
Why is Deep Cleaning Your Teeth Important?
Brushing, flossing, and regularly rinsing your mouth are important for oral health. But they’re often insufficient — they can’t get rid of every last trace of food particles stuck in the deepest corners of your mouth. These food particles eventually turn into a sticky white substance called plaque, which eventually hardens into tartar.
Both plaque and tartar invite material infection and decay. Over time, the bacteria spread to your gums and your bone structure. This can cause pockets to form between your gums and your teeth, which leads to gum recession. In healthy situations, this pocket should not be any more than 3 millimeters deep, but if you suffer from gum disease, these pockets can even go beyond 5 millimeters in depth.
If this continues, gum disease can infect your gums and bone structure. This can have terrible consequences. Initially, gum disease may manifest in the form of toothaches, bad breath, or yellowing teeth. Eventually, your gums become sensitive and start bleeding while brushing. Finally, once you’re in the final stages of gum disease (periodontitis), your teeth start rotting. In this case, the only way to save your teeth is through root canal treatment or you may even have to go for tooth extraction if they’re beyond saving.
As you can see, avoiding deep cleaning procedure can lead to gum disease, which can have dire consequences and even lead to tooth loss. But if you simply visit your dentist on a regular basis for dental deep cleaning, you can avoid all of these problems.
Steps in the Teeth Cleaning Procedure
Most teeth cleaning procedures are carried out by dental hygienists. The following are the steps involved in the teeth cleaning procedure.
The dental cleaning process begins with a physical examination of your mouth. The dental hygienist will use a small mirror to examine the teeth and gums for signs of gingivitis or periodontitis. Based on their observation, they’ll proceed with the teeth cleaning accordingly.
Plaque and Tartar Removal
As previously mentioned, food particles eventually turn into plaque and tartar. The dentist will use a small mirror and a scaler to remove all traces of plaque and tartar from between your teeth and from your gum line. Tartar is usually pretty hard so the dental hygienist will need to take some time to thoroughly scrape them off. This entire process is known as scaling.
Gum Line Reattachment
The dental hygienist may also find that you’re suffering from periodontitis and that there are pockets between your gums and teeth. In that case, the dental hygienist will conduct a root planing procedure to smoothen the root surface so that your gums can be reattached to your teeth. This procedure is only necessary in the case of periodontitis.
The dental hygienist will use a high-powered electric toothbrush and a gritty toothpaste to scrub the surface of your teeth. This will thoroughly polish your teeth.
The dental hygienist will expertly floss your teeth to remove any remaining food particles or plaque and tartar from between your teeth. They’ll also identify what’s the best way to floss your teeth and instruct you about it.
Finally, the dental hygienist will apply a fluoride gel to protect your teeth from bacterial infections and cavities for the next couple of months. The dental hygienist will place a fluoride gel into a mouthpiece that you’ll have to wear for one minute. The dental hygienist will also brush a fluoride varnish on your teeth to further protect it.
Based on your oral condition, the dental hygienist may also recommend some additional steps like an x-ray examination. In children, the dentist may also recommend molar sealants as they can prevent cavities from setting into deeper teeth.
