General Dentistry

At West Orem Dental, we offer a wide range of general dentistry services like preventive dentistry, teeth cleaning, oral cancer screening, TMD/TMJ treatments, scaling & root planing, pediatric dentistry, and bruxism treatments. Preventative Dentistry

Preventative dentistry involves a range of dental services that ensure you maintain optimal oral health. If you fail to take care of your teeth, it’s easy to fall prey to gum disease and other oral issues. Preventative dentistry refers to treatments like regular dental cleaning, dental exams, scaling, and root planing, i.e., procedures that either examine your oral health or minimize the circumstances that can lead to gum disease. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), one must go for regular preventative dentistry treatments once in a few months.

Teeth Cleaning

Teeth cleaning, also known as dental cleaning or deep teeth cleaning, is a procedure that prevents the occurrence of gum disease. No matter how well you brush and floss your teeth, it’s not possible to get rid of every single trace of food particles stuck in your mouth. These food particles eventually turn into a white substance called plaque, which eventually leads to the formation of tartar. This invites bacterial infection, which can lead to gum disease. During a professional teeth cleaning procedure, the dental hygienist uses several treatments to remove all plaque and tartar and get rid of bacterial infection. The dentist uses a scaling device to remove all food particles, plaque, and tartar from your mouth. The dentist also advises you on the best way to brush and floss your teeth. Finally, the dental hygienist uses a fluoride treatment solution to get rid of bacteria and prevent more bacteria from setting in for a few months.

Oral Cancer Screening

Oral cancer can happen to anyone, but it’s especially common in people who regularly smoke, consume alcohol, or are regularly exposed to direct sunlight. If you suffer from oral cancer, it’s best to detect it at one of the earlier stages when it can still be treated rather than to detect it later when treatment is difficult. During oral cancer screening, the dentist runs a series of visual tests, physical tests, and imaging tests to examine your mouth and find signs of oral cancer. These signs may include things like white or red patches on the roof of your mouth, lumps, presence of cancerous lesions, and many others. Once the dentist detects signs of oral cancer, it’s best to follow their recommendations for treatment immediately, before the cancer spreads further and becomes hard to control.

Dr Grant did a wonderful job, I had no pain during the procedure or afterwards, only soreness. I’m now having a root canal done and have also been well taken of….no pain. He informs you of what he will be doing. He and all his staff are very friendly. It is so comforting to walk in the door and be greeted by smiling faces from the ladies at the front desk. The TMJ, short for temporomandibular joint, is located on both sides of your face and they’re responsible for all of your jaw movements. TMD, i.e., temporomandibular joint disorder, is a condition in which this joint gets damaged and is incapable of functioning correctly. This may happen for one of several reasons such as the misalignment of discs, damaged cartilage, or because of injuries. When that happens, you may suffer from stiffened jaws, a popping or clicking sound when you move your jaws, or other such problems. The dentist has to first diagnose the root cause of TMD and then treat it accordingly. Treatments for TMD may be medicinal, therapeutic, or surgical.

Scaling & Root Planing

Scaling and root planing and both extremely simple and non-invasive procedures for gingivitis and periodontitis. These procedures may either be done independently or during your regular dental cleaning appointment. Scaling is a procedure in which the dentist or dental hygienist uses a scalar device to scrape off all the accumulated plaque and tartar from your teeth. Root planing is only done if you’re already suffering from periodontitis and there’s a pocket of space between your gums and teeth. In that case, the dentist will soothe the tooth’s root surface to attach it to your gums again. These treatments are usually enough to treat both gingivitis and periodontitis.

Pediatric Dentistry

Treating dental issues in children is quite different from those in adults. For example, children suffer from issues like dental caries and they suffer from various complications as their baby teeth transition into permanent teeth. That’s why it’s necessary to find a specialized pediatric dentist to take care of your children’s oral health. You should start bringing your children to a pediatric dentistry as soon as their teeth first come in. In addition to being especially capable of treating dental issues in children, a pediatric dentist will also be ideally suited to put your children at ease so they’re not scared of their dental visits.

Bruxism/ Teeth Grinding

Bruxism or teeth grinding is an issue in which you feel the persistent need to clench or grind your teeth. This can happen during the day if you’re suffering from immense stress. Or if can even happen during the night. Some people also suffer from daytime and nocturnal grinding. Over time, bruxism can lead to issues like chipped teeth, insomnia due to lack of sleep, temporomandibular joint disorder, and so much more. A good way to prevent some of the adverse effects of teeth grinding is to wear a mouthguard while the dentist curates a treatment plan to address the root cause of bruxism.
