Teeth Whitening

Teeth Whitening

Most people consider teeth whitening treatment at some point in their lives. As the name suggests, professional teeth whitening is a procedure that whitens your teeth by getting rid of stains and discoloration. This is one of the most popular cosmetic dental procedures because it can instantly improve your smile dramatically.

You can either go for professional teeth whitening or you can even use teeth whitening products at home, though the latter of these options isn’t very reliable. You should also note that teeth whitening is a temporary solution and you’ll have to repeat it every couple of months to maintain white teeth. In this article, we discuss the best professional teeth whitening procedure available.

Why do you Need Whitening Treatment?

The color of your teeth depends on several factors related to the external layer of your teeth called enamel — its thickness, the color of the underlying dentin layer, and its pores. Thicker enamel is usually brighter because it masks the color of the underlying dentin layer. However, you can’t control the color of the dentin or the thickness of your enamel as they’re based on genetic factors.

However, what you can control is the amount of stains your teeth pick up. The pores on the enamel can pick up and hold stains. As such, over time, various factors cause your enamel to get stained and start looking yellow. The following factors increase the likelihood of your enamel getting stained:

  • Smoking.
  • Tobacco consumption.
  • Consuming drinks with tannic acid like red wine.
  • Drinking lots of coffee or tea.
  • Poor oral hygiene and not brushing thoroughly enough.

In addition to these, your teeth may also start looking yellower as you age. That’s because the enamel gets thinner over time, which makes the underlying dentin more prominent.

You need teeth whitening treatment in order to counteract all of these factors and restore the whiteness of your teeth. In order to do so, the doctor has to first determine the root cause of the stains on your teeth and then proceed accordingly.

It’s also worth noting that you may also have intrinsic stains, i.e., stains caused by exposure to fluoride as a child or because of the use of tetracycline antibiotics by pregnant mothers. Teeth whitening treatment may be useless in this case, so you should consult your dentist to determine what’s the right course of action for you.

Best Professional Teeth Whitening Procedure

Best Professional Teeth Whitening Procedure

During in-office or professional teeth whitening procedure, your dentist first photographs your teeth, which allows them to monitor your treatment. Following that, they’ll determine which type of teeth whitening treatment is best for you, clean your teeth to remove all bacteria, and then proceed with the procedure. There are essentially two types of professional teeth whitening procedures based on the type of tooth you have— vital whitening and non-vital whitening.

Vital Whitening

Vital whitening is a teeth whitening procedure performed on teeth with live nerves. During this procedure, a gel containing hydrogen peroxide is applied to the teeth. Following this, a special light or laser is used to activate the bleaching process. The whole process may take around 30 to 90 minutes and you may need several sessions depending on the severity of the discoloration.

Non-Vital Whitening

Non-vital whitening is a teeth whitening procedure performed on teeth that have undergone a root canal treatment. In this case, there’s no point in whitening the surface of the teeth because the discoloration stems from within the teeth. That’s why the doctor will place the whitening gel within the affected tooth and then place a temporary filling to close it. The whitening gel will be left inside for a few days and the procedure may be repeated several times till you achieve the perfect desired shade.

Home Teeth Whitening Products

Home teeth whitening is a procedure in which the dentist helps you whiten your teeth on your own without having to repeatedly go to the dentist. In this case, the dentist will make a custom whitening strip or tray that can hold the whitening gel in place. You simply have to wear the teeth whitening strip for it to start working. You need to wear the teeth whitening strip regularly for two to three weeks.

You also get over-the-counter teeth whitening products. But they’re rarely effective because there’s no dentist to determine what’s the root cause of your problem and how you should go about the procedure.

How to Maintain White Teeth?

Teeth whitening is a temporary procedure. In order to maintain white teeth, you need to do the following:

  • Don’t smoke or consume beverages like red wine, coffee, and tea.
  • Brush and floss your teeth regularly — at least twice a day.
  • Go for regular teeth whitening treatments at intervals of 6 months to 12 months.

Frequently Asked Questions about Teeth Whitening

Do teeth whitening solutions actually work?

Teeth whitening solutions actually do work, but you need to visit a dentist who can accurately diagnose the root cause of the discoloration and address it. For example, regular teeth whitening may be suitable for surface stains, but the dentist will need to do non-vital whitening for a tooth stained internally because of a root canal procedure. It’s also important to note that certain intrinsic stains can’t be removed at all.

What is the best teeth-whitening product available?

There are a number of teeth whitening strips and whitening gel that you can use to whiten your teeth. However, you should discuss which product is the best for your needs with your dentist.

What are the risks of teeth whitening?

There are no serious risks of teeth whitening. You should, however, note that your teeth may become sensitive after the teeth whitening treatment and you may experience some gum irritation. It’s also not advisable for pregnant women to get their teeth whitened because the gel can affect the fetus.
